March 14, baby oops

By Jill | Filed in Uncategorized

Well if you read the previous post, you will realize I’m talking about our house.

It has been extremely rainy here. If you follow me on facebook then you realize that really, it’s put us back a LOT. By March 16, our house was supposed to be set and finalized the rest of the week. As in by today. That didn’t happen, of course. This did:

Here's an idea of the issue: There's a 2x4 under the ground that should be on top of it!

The area was so soft that it sunk into the ground. This should be, interesting when everything happens. We REALLY hope that March 22 the 2nd half of our new baby should arrive and by the end of that week, we should be ready to start the upstairs!

Yeah!!!!

This is the truck that brought our baby, er, half a baby in!

He parked it on the neighbor's hill THISCLOSE to his truck!

Spring flowers…

By Jill | Filed in Uncategorized

With all the rain we have had, it is time to start thinking about flowers. Two weekends ago, when we borrowed my dad’s tractor to mow, he also tilled a spot for a garden. The big problem they ran into was ice, about 3 inches into the soil! Yikes! The rest was mushy from all the rain, but ice! I never asked, but I hope it did not hurt the tines on the tiller any.

My mom always has a big garden. She plants all kinds of things, and really, she tends to plant different things in different years, and there are good years and bad. She always has flowers though, and tends to plant zinnias in the garden, for my dad. They are a later blooming flower, and attract a lot of bees, which is good for pollination! We will probably start with peppers, tomatoes, and perhaps potatoes this year. Simple things that need water, but not much care.

All these things make me think of the type of flowers that I’ve love to have at our new place. Yeah! The ground is warming up and pretty soon the frost will quit sneaking in at night. One thing I had never considered before is window boxes. However, since our house will be very plain (white with black shutters), it would probably look good with some color spilling out of the house, as if the house itself was blooming! Other things I would love to do include planting pre-sprouted bulbs this spring, a couple of hanging planters from our porch, and getting some marigolds in to ward off the bugs! I have a lot of favorite flowers, and I’m excited to see what we can landscape out of our home in the woods! Please feel free to tell you me your favorite flowers so I can start planning! I would really love advice about ’stacking’ spring and summer blossoms so I have areas that bloom all year long!

First of all, the neighbors at our rental house are either ignoring us, or have introduced themselves and are friendly. Awesome.

After meeting 2 of our closest neighbors at the property, I was inspired to say “Thank you God for giving me such sucky neighbors at our apartment, so we could have such awesome neighbors for our permanent home”…

D&D live past us, on around the corner. He does tree cutting and she works in health care. They have 3 kids aged 13-8. The dude seems like someone Matt could get along with and have a good time with. I am reserving judgment on the lady, she was in a hurry to go while we were doing what we were doing, but she talked to me like I was worthy (which a lot of working women don’t), but friendly enough. There is a big BUT and it is a good but! The guy offered to let us use his equipment (I’ll save you the logistics and say tractor) to help get any further trucks unstuck should it happen again. Drove it right down there, putt putt putt, showed Matt how to use it and off they went. So cool!

Then we met the people up on the hill. We interrupted their dinner (oops), but it was important. They are G&D (I think) and have a daughter older than us (granddaughter is a teen and sometimes stays with them when the dude is gone to keep grandma company–aww!).. anyway, they said, anything we needed, any tools or whatever, it was cool with them, they were excited to have new people moving in, just let them know.

So we posed the question, because of the wetness of the ground (did I mention that it has been raining here? Ugh) the people that drove the first part of the house in, wanted to drop off the second piece the next day, and they wanted to put it ON the neighbors property, so they didn’t sink into the ground.

You know what? They said, that’s fine, whatever you need, do I need to move my truck sitting there? Etc.

And it was a really good thing…

Fun Monday: Lunchroom style

By Jill | Filed in Uncategorized

Faye is this week’s hostess for Fun Monday. I’ve been out of the loop for a couple of weeks due to our move, and I all the sudden found a post on Pamela’s site leading me to the topic, so here I am..

Okay, we want to know: So your assignment for March 15 is to share your memories of school lunches. What kind of school did you attend–public, private, parochial, city or country? Did you bring lunch from home or buy in the school cafeteria? Or, did you go home for lunch? What did your lunch look like? Who prepared it? Who did you have lunch with? Was this a happy part of the school day? What did you do during lunch time other than eat your PB & J sandwich?

I attended a public school in a small town. My class had 52 graduates, and it was one of the biggest classes in the school. For most of the time, I was eligible for a ‘free lunch’, a hot lunch from the school, but I didn’t like them. So typically I brought my lunch from home. Because we didn’t have much money, most of the time I got a peanut butter sandwich, and to this day, I don’t eat a peanut butter sandwich very often, if at all. I do recall a lot of how the school lunches looked, giant greasy squares of pizza (they always served it with rubbery corn), mystery meats that only tasted good with ketchup, and at this time of year, all the stinking fish on Fridays. Couldn’t they once have just made macaroni and cheese, or even grilled cheese? Uck. You couldn’t pay me to eat those now. As a kid, lunch was probably a pretty fun time of day, but as I got older, it was less fun, I stopped eating altogether at lunch or had a snack of some sort and a soda. I hung out with my friends, scrambled to do some homework, or sat and gossiped happily.

*Note, as a kid, I remember having a She-Ra lunchbox including a thermos that was blue. I really hope that I can find a similar thing for my daughter to take to lunches, because of the greenness of it!

**Additional note, if you DO have kids and you regularly send them stuff in plastic baggies, consider a switch to reusable baggies, they can often be washed, by hand, in the laundry, or dishwasher, and come in various sizes, use velcro or snaps, etc. Talk about a green way to live!

Update on property

By Jill | Filed in Uncategorized

Okay, so we borrowed my dad’s tractor and mowed. That helped a LOT. It will help dry out the rain and of course make it less like pasture and more like, a yard, I guess!

We also have a garage floor!
